To accompany our anniversary exhibition, selected authors read from their novels. In conversation, historians and authors discuss the events described in the different works from diverse perspectives and contextualise them historically. In this way, the tense network of relationships between reality and fiction becomes visible.
The exact dates are to be announced in due course.

As we all know, some clichés seem to live forever. North Rhine-Westphalia’s various regions are all associated with particular characteristics – but are they more than just clichés? Are people in the Rhineland area always ready to party? Does Lippe’s population truly have a regal air? Are Westphalians down to earth – and Ruhr area residents nothing more than hard workers?
In autumn 2021 the “eigenartig einzigartig” (“strangely unique”) event series took an entertaining look at just these questions – and provided the perfect company to our anniversary exhibition “OUR STATE. 75 Years of North Rhine-Westphalia”.
At four different regional venues – Detmold (Lippe), Cologne (Rhineland), Essen (Ruhr area) and Münster (Westphalia) – the event series invited you to join comedians and experts in an enjoyable and amusing exchange of views.
In Detmold, comedian Rüdiger Hoffmann joined Stephan, Prince of Lippe, in Cologne Cordula Stratmann met historian Dr. Dagmar Hänel, in Essen Frank Goosen talked to political scientist Prof. Dr. Karl-Rudolf Korte, and in Münster musician and comedian Prof. Dr. Götz Alsmann debated with historian Prof. Dr. Malte Thießen. In each of these conversations, our two guests took a humorous look at the qualities and history of the various regions merged in 1946 to form North Rhine-Westphalia.
